Life Transitions

Are you shedding an old skin, grappling with a new identity, or feeling in the cosmic soup – neither here nor there? Are you leaving something behind, not sure of what is coming next?

Transitions happen to us throughout our lives, and often we’re so busy just surviving that we don’t allow ourselves time to acknowledge what is ending, to be with not-knowing and take time for reflection - so we can truly embrace the emergence of something new.

This workshop offers creative practices and tools that support moving through all the phases of of a life transition - endings, in-betweens, and new beginnings.

Grounded in the methods and practices of the Tamalpa Life/Art Process® we will take time out be with what is happening in a supportive space, engage creatively, and discover resources for moving through.

Transitions come in all shapes and sizes.

Two years ago a major shift in my work life thrust me into a period of transition. Then other major mid-life transitions started piling on - empty nest, peri-menopause, a father with dementia. Even small changes started to feel like significant endings. My old strategy of powering through didn’t seem to be working. My body was demanding a period of rest and contemplation, and I wanted time to explore this unknown territory.

Your life transition may be fresh or it may have been going on for years. It may be caused by a loss or a gain. It may seem positive on the outside but feel terrible on the inside, or vice versa. You may have brought this transition upon yourself, or it may have been thrust upon you. It may seem huge and monumental to you but no one else realizes its impact.

No matter the size or shape of your transition, it is a rich time of growth and change. When we move through it, rather than skipping over or skipping ahead, we get to receive the boon, the teaching, the blessing. This is one way to enter that process.

Listen for what is alive

This workshop is for you if you find yourself moving through one (or many) life transitions and want to work with the rich possibilities of this time.

We will engage with the creative arts – with movement, drawing, and poetic writing to help us identify where we are in our process and what we need to keep going. We start with the body, with movement, because movement is our first language. We listen for what is alive, what needs to be moved, what wants to be expressed. We use the other art modalities to expand the voice of the body and to give new insight. The creative encounter in the studio then becomes a metaphor for what is happening in our lives. In this way, we activate our creative expression in service of our own growth and healing.

What am I here to learn about? What is this transition asking of me?

Let the body speak. Let the art speak.

Bring your curiosity, a willingness to improvise and play, and let yourself be surprised by what you discover.

Join me.
